First week is done..
Practising in Xanit International Hospital..
First day we get to know different departments at the hospital.
Petra was really nice and busy person. She tried to guide us at the same time when she was counsel and negotiate patient, nurses and doctors. Quite a multi person. Hats off for her (if you know what I mean).
There was much standing and waiting but it was nice that we had time to look around. However, I was really confused after the day. Luckily, I had two other sisters with me to talk about it. Another was class mate and the other has different course and she´s from different city and going health center to practice. After that tour I was really nervous to start real action next day at second department even that´s quite familiar to me.
We were staying in Carvajal and the hospital was at Benalmadena. Train station was just a few hundred meters from the apartment, but waiting for connection bus at Benalmadena station early in the morning was frustrating. 35 minutes was long time to wait in the dark morning, but I had my class mate traveling same journey, so it was quite pleasure to have someone sharing the experience morning and afternoons.
First days I get to know the habits, day rhythm and the basic things in department. It was pretty strange that health care workers went to breakfast about ten o´clock, but I get used to it in few days. In Finland clock was eleven and I normally eat lunch at that time. First week went fine... I was getting patients blood pressures, blood sugar, put injections and so. Blood sample I didn´t have courage to take, because they had so different way to take it and I think I didn´t have skill enough to do it. There was supplies to vacuum sample but here nurses use syringe. Many other things were very very different but it seemed to me that it wasn´t bad. Here was twelve patient for one nurse. It sounded terribly many. The thing was, that nurse did only nursing. Nurse didn´t change diapers, didn´t showered, change sheets or shared breakfast. Nurse take care of medication distribution, wound care, blood tests, oxidizing, pain management, and so on.. If patient wanted off the bed to sit on the chair, there was strong man who came to help on that. Nurse didn´t move patient off the bed. There were cleaners, assistant nurses, several doctors and much staff that I didn´t know which of job description they had.
First week was very exciting and people seemed to enjoy of working. I could get used to this ;)
